British Values
The DfE has reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs."
At Netheravon All Saints we uphold and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:
- democracy;
- rule of law;
- individual liberty;
- mutual respect;
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
These values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
At Netheravon All Saints, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
- We have an elected school council where pupils' voices are heard and pupils also have the opportunity to complete questionnaires.
- Our collective worship calendar actively promotes values through the use of SMSC and RE objectives. These values are a focus for each term and incorporated further into PSHE and RE lessons.
- Pupils are taught the school values of love, kindess, respect, trust and determination. Through following our school Golden Rule they learn about the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police feature regularly in our calendar and help to reinforce this message. In the broad and balanced curriculum that we deliver there is opportunity to discuss these.
- Pupils are actively encouraged and supported to make informed choices, to know and exercise their rights and personal freedom safely, for example through our e-safety policy.
- Our positive behaviour policy encourages tolerance and mutual respect. This is used rigorously by all staff and well understood by children and parents.
- We visit different places of worship and have visitors to school from other faiths.
- Every four years, as a whole school, we celebrate the Olympics with an Olympic themed sports days, and competitions.
- As a school we recognize and celebrate traditional Saints days and visit the church.
- We learn about the importance of Remembrance each year and our school councillors children visit the war graves in the village to lay poppies on behalf of the school.
At Netheravon All Saints, we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
