Personal Development
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24
Just as the wise builder chose to build his house on solid foundations, so a well-lived, successful life requires solid foundations. Through our curriculum, we aim to give our children the knowledge and skills – the foundations - they need to become fulfilled, successful, loving adults in their world.
Personal development is at the heart of everything we do at Netheravon. We want to support the children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding - the foundations - that will enable them to manage their lives now and in the future. A strong personal development curriculum helps pupils to flourish and develop their characters during their time at Netheravon.
As a church school, our personal development offer is underpinned by our vision and values. It is woven into everything we do, from relationships with the children to our curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities.
Intent
Our intent is built around our vision: Loving and learning, striving and caring: Together we flourish and grow.
Loving and learning:
We aim to develop children’s understanding of morality in themselves and others, and develop their social skills and understanding of society. We aim to support them to build a set of personal beliefs and engage in the community in which they live, alongside developing an understanding of the communities of others. Through our work on our values, children learn that showing love towards others makes the world a better place for all.
Our aim is that all children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum so that they can develop their knowledge and skills in each subject. This includes developing their understanding of personal development topics including health, British Values, relationships and sex education and e-safety.
Striving and caring:
We aim to develop children’s characters by allowing them opportunities to challenge and stretch themselves, both through our curriculum and extra-curricular offer. We aim to develop a deep sense of compassion and empathy for others that they can carry through into their future lives, as well as a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
Together we flourish and grow:
We aim to develop the characters of our children and ensure that they develop the behaviours and habits needed to become resilient, successful learners. We aim to ensure that children feel confident to express their beliefs and take action, and recognise how other people’s actions are driven by their beliefs and experiences. All children are part of our community at Netheravon, and we seek to enable all to flourish through a sense of safety, encouragement and confidence.
Implementation
Personal development at Netheravon is an ongoing process that starts in the Early Years and is embedded in all that we do.
All children experience the same offer and we ensure that any necessary adaptations are made for disadvantaged pupils and children with special educational needs. We allocate the necessary funding to ensure that all pupils have access to opportunities that enable them to flourish and grow.
We believe that personal development covers the following areas:
- Curriculum experiences – building cultural capital
- Wider opportunities/extra curricular activities – to explore and develop interests, talents and skills
- Healthy lifestyles and mental health – enabling children to be healthy in mind as well as body
- Spiritual development – to experience a journey of personal growth of who we are on the inside and how we behave on the outside
- Community and understanding of others – to build social and moral understanding to give to others in different ways
- British Values and Citizenship – to develop an understanding of rights and responsibilities, inclusion and equality of opportunity, and to be prepared for life in modern Britain
Many of the opportunities for our children to develop personally are embedded into the areas below:
- Netheravon Values: love, kindness, respect, trust, determination

Impact
Pupils’ characters develop through the experiences and opportunities on offer at Netheravon CE Primary School. Our values help our children to develop positive, compassionate mind-sets, resilience and the ability to live well in the world and make a positive contribution towards it. Through our personal development offer, pupils build strong foundations for their present and future selves.
The Headteacher monitors the impact of our personal development curriculum through observation and pupil voice, including pupil surveys. We also use responses to both parent and staff surveys as additional evidence of the impact of our personal development curriculum.
