“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

Just as the wise builder chose to build his house on solid foundations, so a well-lived, successful life requires solid foundations. Through our curriculum, we aim to give our children the knowledge and skills – the foundations - they need to become fulfilled, successful, loving adults in their world.

Intent

Our carefully planned PE curriculum supports all our learners from both our village and military communities. We aim for every child to experience a wide range of sports and activities that will inspire them to develop lifelong active, healthy lifestyles, promoting and nurturing both their physical and mental well-being. Through carefully planned, inclusive competition we want children to develop the values of trust in their teammates and respect for their opposition. We teach children to strive and show determination to perform to their best, and enjoy their own successes, while developing friendship and teamwork through the shared experiences of sport. We will use the wide-open spaces provided in and around our rural village location to provide a range of fun and competitive PE and outdoor learning opportunities, drawing on support from partners in our military community to augment festivals such as sports day.

Implementation

  • Our broad and inclusive PE curriculum is taught by specialist PE teachers who provide mentoring and tutoring for school staff to ensure all learners receive high-quality, active lessons twice every week.
  • Children attend school in kit ready to participate in PE to ensure that they are ready and active from the first minute of their lessons.
  • The Netheravon journey towards active, heathy lifestyles starts with our youngest children in EYFS, who have two dedicated sessions of physical activity and movement every week, supplemented by wide experiences of active learning and the outdoors.
  • In KS1, all children receive 1.2 – 1.75 hours of high-quality PE across two lessons each week, delivered by specialist PE teachers, supported by classroom support staff. In KS2, children receive two hours of PE weekly.
  • Our broad and progressive curriculum develops children's skills through a wide range of learning opportunities. Years 1 & 2 practise fundamental skills placed in the context of games and activities, then Years 3 to 6 apply these skills in the context of specific sports and physical activities, additionally developing their understanding of rules and tactics.
  • All children in KS1 & KS2 have the opportunity to represent their team or the school in intra-school (within our school) and inter-school (against other schools) competitions, including at least one off-site competition or festival over the course of the year.
  • Children have additional opportunities to join funded after-school or lunchtime clubs provided by specialist PE teachers.
  • Children in Year 5 & 6 participate in swimming lessons, delivered by qualified swimming teachers.
  • All children take part in a competitive sports day in the summer term.
  • Classes participate in a ‘daily mile’ run to improve stamina and fitness.
  • Children are encouraged to lead active lives before, during and after school through on-site activities, and links and newsletters sharing opportunities within the wider community.

Impact

P.E at Netheravon All Saints helps children flourish by promoting wellbeing and embedding positive attitudes towards healthy, active lifestyles. Through high quality teaching, children learn personal and social skills such as respect, teamwork, trust and determination and learn about themselves and their own skills, abilities and preferences as they become active, healthy citizens.
